Klein, Walter  (13 JULY 1922-`9 FEB 2011)

Walter F. Klein, 88, Spencer, was born into eternal life on Saturday, Feb. 19, 2011, at the Golden Living Center, Three Oaks Nursing Home, Marshfield, surrounded by his family and under the compassionate care of hospice. Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m., on Wednesday, Feb. 23, at the Hansen-Schilling Funeral Home, Spencer, and again from 10 a.m. until service time at 11 a.m., on Thursday, Feb. 24, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Spencer. Rev. Rebekah Tarras will officiate. Burial will be in the North Spencer Cemetery.

Walter F. Klein was born on July 13, 1922, in Marathon County, a son of Edward and Leona (nee Manthe) Klein. He attended Harding elementary and was a graduate of Spencer High School. On Feb. 19, 1950, he married Alvera Zophia at Zion Lutheran Church, Stratford. She preceded him in death on Oct. 17. 1980. The couple owned and operated a dairy farm in the town of Brighton from 1950-74.

The farm has been in the Klein family for five generations and Walter’s grandchildren currently operate the farm. He was proud of the fact that he milked first by hand and hauled it with a bucket and then used milking machines with pipelines to transport the milk, until recently when a milking parlor with the newest technology was installed on the family farm. Farming was his passion. He received the Soil Conservation Award from Marathon County as well as the Outstanding Retired Farmer Award from the Jaycees. After he retired from farming, he began working at Land O’Lakes Dairy in Spencer until finally fully retiring in 1984. Farm, faith and family were central in his life. He cherished the time he could spend with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He will be remembered as a soft spoken man who was very kind-hearted. He was an active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church and always looked forward to his visits with Pastor Rebekah. He also served as chairman for the town of Brighton.

He is lovingly survived by a daughter, Gwendolyn (Ron) Schmidt, Spencer; four grandchildren, Matthew (Amy) Schmidt, Mark (Jenny) Schmidt, Kari Ann Schmidt and Suzanne (Korey) Boyd; three great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn & Christopher Schmidt and Hunter Boyd; and one sister, Gladys Geigner, Sea Tac, Wash.

Preceding him in death were one sister, Edna Lau; and three brothers, Gerhard, Raymond and Herman.
