Charles P. Weiler. 82, Union Grove, died on Saturday, March 15, 2003, at his home. A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 20, at St. Robert Bellarmine Catholic Church, Union Grove. Burial was in Union Grove Cemetery with full military honors accorded by Bixby-Hansen American Legion Post 171.

 

Charles P. Weiler was born on June 21, 1920, in Milwaukee, to George and Mary (nee Fonk) Weiler. He attended St. Charles Grade School in Burlington and graduated from Burlington High School. He also attended Marquette University. He married Phyllis Price on May 27, 1944. On June 21, 1944, he entered the U.S. Army as a member of the 5th Armored Division. He saw action during World War ll in Germany, France, Holland and Belgium. He participated in the Battle of the Bulge and was captured by the German SS and was a prisoner of war for a short time. He was wounded in action and received the Purple Heart. After returning from the war, he became a mail carrier in Union Grove. He carried mail until retiring in 1975. His wife died on Aug. 9, 1972. He then married Joan Steward on June 28, 1975. He was a charter member of Robert Bellarmine Catholic Church and a member and former commander of Bixby-Hansen American Legion Post 171, Union Grove. His interests included hunting, fishing, woodworking, bird watching, gardening and reading.

 

Survivors include his wife, Joan, Union Grove; three children, William Weiler, Neillsville, Jane (John) Babik, Rochester, Minn., and Richard (Rose) WEiler, Burlington; three step-children, Michael (Linda) Steward, Lawrence (Kathy) Steward, and Carolyn Steward; eight grandchildren, Jennifer (Dan Grady), Terese, Kristin, Karen, Melanie and Matthew Weiler, Bradley Sundstrom and Kevin Babik; five stepgrandchildren, Jodi, Megan, Ryan, Jonathon and Patrick Steward; two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Price Stokes and Jean (Herbert) Foat; one brother-in-law, David (Ellen) Walle; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

 

Preceding him in death were his first wife, Phyllis; his parents; one stepgrandson, Michael Steward; one sister, Myrtle May; one brother-in-law, Francis May; three brothers, George Weiler, Tony Weiler and John Weiler; three sisters-in-law, Cecelia Weiler, Loretta Weiler and Janet Weiler; and one son-in-law, William Schnitkey.

 

Polnasek-Daniels Funeral Home, Union Grove, assisted the family with arrangements.
