Michael D. Schwantes, 55, Hewitt, Minn., died on Monday, Jan. 13, 2003, in Wadena, Minn. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., on Friday, Jan. 17, at the Hewitt Community Center. The Rev. Jacob Neufeld officiated. Burial was in the Hewitt Cemetery. Pallbearers were David Schwantes, Thomas Schwantes, Charles Schwantes, Daniel Schwantes, Jim Walker, Norman Cook, Wes Simpson, David Simpson, Steven Simpson and Darrell Simpson Jr.

 

Michael Dennos Schwantes was born on Feb. 1, 1947, in Spencer, to Leonard and Margaret (nee Semlar) Schwantes. He married Karen Simpson on July 12, 1969, in Sitka, Alaska. He lived in Hewitt, Minn., for 29 years and worked for the city in maintenance. He was a member of the Lion’s Club and fire department. His interests included his grandchildren, woodworking, oil painting and gardening.

 

Survivors include his wife, Karen Schwantes; two sons, Aaron (Shelly) Schwantes, Fargo, N.D., and Anthony (Stephanie) Schwantes, Fargo, N.D.; one daughter, Tamera (Matthew) Sorum, Fergus Falls, Minn.; four grandchildren, Devin, Spencer, Eli, and Sylvia; three brothers, David Schwantes, Anchorage, Alaska, Charles (Margaret) Schwantes, Coupeville, Wash., and Tom (Lila) Schwantes, Kodiak, Alaska; two sisters, Judy Rickert, Heppner, Ore. And Daisy (Norman) Cook, Sheboygan Falls; and numerous nieces

 and, nephews.

 

Preceding him in death were his patents and one sister, Carolyn Nunley.

 

Domian-Anderson Funeral Home, Bertha, Minn., assisted the family with arrangements.
