Schmidt, Joseph (19 JUN 1866 - 13 JUL 1952)

 

Funeral services were held for Joseph Smith, 86, at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, Wednesday at 9 a.m.  The Rev. Norbert King officiated at the requiem mass.  Interment was in the parish cemetery.

 

Mr. Schmidt died at the home of his son John at 1:00 p.m. Sunday, July 13, 1952, of old age complications.  A rosary service was held at the Myre Funeral Home, Tuesday evening at 8:15.

 

He was born in Bion, Germany, June 19, 1866, and came to America when he was 20 years old.  He was employed on a farm in Jefferson County for six months and then came to Clark county where he worked in the woods and in a sawmill. He then went to Montana where he worked on a railroad.

 

Returning to Wisconsin he worked in a logging camp at Butternut, later returning to Clark County where he continued farm, sawmill and logging work until he bought forty acres of land in York Township.  This was the beginning of the large farm he came to own later.

 

Mr. Schmidt was married to Mary Pompo on Oct. 10, 1893.  She preceded him in death in July 1936. 

 

He is survived by 5 sons, John, George, Edward, Andrew and Allie, and by 3 daughters, Mrs. John (Rose) Walters, Mrs. Fred (Elsie) Adler, and Mrs. Ray (Margaret) Horn, and 1 sister, Mrs. George (Anna) Schecklman, all of Loyal. 31 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren also survive.

 

Serving as pallbearers were Joseph Schmidt, Paul Schmidt, Donald Schmidt, Harold Schmidt, Dwain Schmidt and Eugene Walters, all grandsons of the deceased.
