Mertens, Clarence (21 MAY 1924 - 3 JAN 2011)

 

WITHEE -- Clarence Mertens, 86, of Withee died Monday, Jan. 3, 2011, at the Colonial Center in Colby.

A Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Owen. Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery, town of Hixon. Visitation will be at the church Thursday from 10 a.m. until time of service.

Clarence was born May 21, 1924, to Edward and Isabella (Scholter) Mertens in the town of Hixon, rural Withee. He farmed on the home place from 1952 until retirement in 1985 when he moved to the town of Longwood.

His first marriage took place Feb. 24, 1949, at the old Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Owen to Helen Oates. She passed away June 13, 1952. His second marriage took place Feb. 4, 1979, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Owen to Adeline Krug. She passed away Feb. 4, 1986.

He is survived by his children, Mary (Gerald) Tomczak of Withee and Edward (Jill) Mertens of Chippewa Falls; six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; stepchildren, Kathleen (Mike) Tomczak of Owen, Christine (Gary) Fritz of Owen, Mike Krug of Owen, Mark (Melissa) Krug of Greenwood and Ricky (Sandra) Krug of Stratford; 20 step-grandchildren and 13 great-step-grandchildren.

Clarence further is survived by a sister, Mary Andrysczyk of Melbourne, Fla.
