Laurent, Edith #3 (22 DEC 1911 - 20 AUG 1957)

 

Mrs. Eugene Laurent, 45, wife of the president of Taylor County Teachers College, died early Tuesday morning, Aug. 20th, 1957, at the Medford hospital where she had been a patient for five weeks.  She had been in ill health for the past nine months following surgery for cancer.

 

Funeral services were held on Friday at Owen (Clark Co., Wis.), Rev. D. K. Marks of New Ulm, Minn., former pastor at Christ Church in Medford, officiated at the rites, and burial was in the Danish Cemetery at Withee.  Mrs. Robert Gingles of Medford, soloist, was accompanied at the organ by Mrs. Theresa Paurs of Prairie du Chien, a school friend of Mrs. Laurent.

 

Serving as pallbearers were John Cross of Marshfield, Herbert Juneau of Abbotsford, Al Pries of Medford, Arthur Procknow, Gilman, and Bill Krause and Harvey Boie, Thorp.

 

Mrs. Laurent, nee Edith Candahl, was born in Jaelland, Denmark, on Dec. 22, 1911.  Her parents brought her to America when she was a young child and she spent most of her life in Owen and Milwaukee.  She is a graduate of the Bay View High School in Milwaukee, rusk County Normal and Wis. state College, Stevens Point.

 

Her marriage to Eugene Laurent took palce at Curtiss on Nov. 16, 1944.  He went to the teachers college at Medford nine years ago and they lived in that city until three years ago, when they purchased a home in Perkinstown.

 

Mrs. Laurent, an elementary teacher, held positions in various Clark County rural schools and also taught in California and in Albuquerque, N.M.  She was on the staff of the Abbotsford Public School when she became ill.

 

She attended Christ Church in Medford and was a member of the Women’s Society of Christian Service and the Medford Study Club.  As a volunteer, she worked with the American Cancer Society for many years and served as a district adjutant in that organization.  She also headed the society’s Medford drive for funds for a number of years.

 

Surviving, besides her husband, are her mother, Mrs. Caroline Candahl of Owen, one sister, Mrs. Roy VanZile of Sturgis, Mich., and one brother, Ernest Candahl of La Crosse.
