Schaefer, Mathias (9 November 1864 - 18 May 1959)

Funeral services will be held this (Thursday) afternoon at 2 p.m. from the Georgas Funeral Home for Mathias Schaefer, 93, who died Monday in Neillsville. The Rev. Ethel B. Nulton, pastor of the Christie Methodist Church, will officiate.  Burial will be made in the Neillsville City Cemetery.

Mr. Schaefer was born November 9, 1864, in Doge County, the son of the late Mathias and Susan (Marx)

Schaefer.  He received his education in the Dodge County schools and worked at odd jobs.

In 1892 he came by team and wagon to Clark County and purchased a farm in the Town of Weston.  His fiancée, the former Emma Silkey, arrived by train, and on November 13, 1892, they were married at Neillsville.  They resided with neighbors until a log building on the land was made livable.

After their retirement from farming they moved to Neillsville, where they lived for 10 years. After the death of his wife, Mr. Schaefer made his home with his son and daughter in law, Mr. and Mrs. George Schaefer, of Christie.  He was active until four years ago.

He is survived by his son, George, Neillsville, Rt. 3, and a daughter, Mrs. Otto (Pearl) Runge, also of Rt. 3, Neillsville.  Other survivors include five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
