Cowles, Hattie (27 DEC 1872 - 2 JAN 1951)

 

Mrs. Cowles died at 9:25 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 2, 1951, at the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. J.R. Steiner, with whom she resided for over nine years.  A semi-invalid for 12 years, she was seriously ill only since Christmas night when she suffered a stroke.

 

Hattie Ann McLean was born in Labett County, Kansas, Dec. 27, 1872, to William and Sarah Fearne McLean, former Wisconsin residents.  In 1882, two years after the death of her mother, she went to South Byron.  On Dec. 27, 1894, she married Edward M. Cowles and lived in the township of LeRoy, Dodge County until 1905, when they moved to South Byron with their four children.

 

Surviving, besides her daughter Alice, are sons Alfred of Roberts, Lawrence of Loyal, 10 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and a foster son, Edward Blank, South Byron.  She was preceded in death by her husband Jan. 11, 1939; son Arthur, August 1923; 2 grandsons, one in infancy and Gerald, killed in Okinawa, June 1945; one great-granddaughter and two brothers, Lewis McLean, South Byron, 1941, and Chas. McLean, Great Falls, Mont.

 

Funeral services were directed by Mr. Myre of Loyal and held at the South Byron Methodist Church, of which she was a member, at 2 p.m., Jan. 4th.  Rev. David Spear, pastor, and Rev. Lee Holmes, Loyal pastor, officiated.

 

Vocal numbers were given by Mrs. Clifford Sampson with Mrs. Robert A. Bird accompanying on the piano.

 

Pallbearers were Bennett S. Bird, Robert A. Bird, Robert C. McLain, Wesley Smith, Clifford Sampson and Lester Nichols.  Burial was in Avoca Cemetery, Oakfield, in the Cowles family lot.

 

Relatives and friends from away who attended the services were from Loyal, Oakfield, Lomira, Fond du Lac, Ripon and Byron.
