Smith, James W. #2 (27 OCT 1866 - JUN 1950)

Funeral services were held from the Griebenow Funeral Home in Owen at 2 o’clock Tuesday afternoon, June 13, for James W. Smith, who passed away in Arkansas.  The Rev. H. D. Wagner, pastor of the Alliance Chapel in Owen, officiated, and burial was made in Riverside Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Walter Fritz, C. E. Beck, Robert Nissen, Ebner Gustafson, Cornelius Driscoll and William Hingiss Sr.  Those in charge of flowers were his granddaughters, Betty and Lavade Smith, Dorothy Paulsen, Hope Cenite, Speaker, Moore.

Mr. Smith was born in Missouri on Oct. 27, 1866.  It was in Missouri that his early childhood was spent.  When he was a young man he moved with his parents to the Indian Territory, which later became Oklahoma.  In the summer of 1882 they moved to Wisconsin, coming here in a covered wagon and settling in what is now the town of Hoard (Clark Co., Wis.).

Surviving children, all of whom attended the funeral, are Mrs. Mae Meilken of Dodgeville, Mrs. Ethel Bowen of Curtiss, Mrs. Carrie Plath and Mrs. Ruth Moore of Mason City, Ia., Mrs. Ida Treloar of Milwaukee, Mrs. Nina Adams of Baraboo, James Smith of Loyal, William Smith of Stitzer and Hiram Smith of Newton, Ia.  His first wife preceded him in death on Aug. 20, 1935.

Mr. Smith married again, and his present wife is residing in Arkansas.  Also surviving are 44 grandchildren and 37 great-grandchildren.
