Russell Monegar, convicted of the fatal stabbing of four members of his family, was sentenced Monday to life imprisonment by Circuit Judge Gerald Boileau.

Boileau turned down defense pleas for a new trial and commitment of the 38-year-old Indian to a mental hospital.

The first degree murder conviction carried a mandatory sentence of life imprisonment in Waupun State Prison.

Monegar has confessed killing his wife, Ophelia, 33; mother-in-law, Mrs. Elizabeth Long, 56; niece Irish Kohlbeck, 5 months, and nephew, Philip Garvin, Jr., 8.  Walter Graunke, defense attorney, based his case on a claim that Mondegar had been under the influence of peyote, a drug, and was not responsible for the actions.
