Shoemaker, Darlene (JUN 1955)

Cecil Mayes, who had the #300 answer when asked if he believes in God, Thursday asked a question of his own and won the hand of a girl he hadn’t met until this past week.

Mayes had been writing to Darlene Shoemaker, 19, who worked at the Thorp Finance Corp. for a little more than a year.  He served with Darlene’s brother, Wayne, in the Air Force.

On his way to meet Miss Shoemaker for the first time, he was picked up by a motorist who asked him if he believes in God, Mayes says, when he replied "Yes," the driver gave him six $50 bills and drove off.

Mayes spent some time with Chicago police who held him for investigation when he told them his story.  A judge later freed him and sent him on his way.

Last Wednesday Mayes and Miss Shoemaker said they would have to know each other better before making any plans for the future.

Friday Miss Shoemaker shoed the Thorp Courier he engagement ring and said she and Mayes plan a June wedding.

Saturday Mayes went by plane to Dumas, Tex., where he has a job with an oil and gas corporation.
