Fleischauer, Emil A. (April 4, 1927 - January 10, 2010)

Emil A. Fleischauer, 82, of Park Ridge, Stevens Point, died on Sunday, Jan. 10, at his home with family at his side.

The son of Emil A. and Carolyn (Vobach) Fleischauer was born on April 4, 1927, in Colby.

He graduated from Colby High School and went on to earn a degree in Accounting from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Emil interrupted his education to serve in the US Navy during World War II. He subsequently earned his Juris Doctorate from the University's Law School in 1951.

In 1949 he married Mary Lou Becker of Colby and the couple moved to Stevens Point two years later where Emil began a long and distinguished career with Sentry Insurance (then Hardware Mutuals).

Emil served in a variety of managerial positions at Sentry before joining the company's legal department in 1959. In 1981 he was elected vice president and general counsel of Sentry Insurance. He also served as director of Sentry's subsidiary companies.

He was a member of the American Bar Association, the State Bar of WI, the Kiwanis Club, served as an officer and director of the Wisconsin Insurance Association and as clerk and then President of the Village of Park Ridge. After retirement Emil was an active member of the Learning is For Ever (LIFE) adult continuing education program.

Emil was a tennis enthusiast who played into his eighties until being stricken with the cancer that took his life. He continued to bike, hike and swim in Wisconsin and at the couple's perennial retreat in Palm Island, Florida, until becoming ill. He was an avid reader and participated in a variety of continuing education programs, lecture series and Elder Hostel programs with his life-long best friend and partner, Mary Becker Fleischauer. He also enjoyed snow skiing in younger years and was a loyal Badger and Packer fan.

To all who knew him Emil was a devoted husband, father and friend. He was dry in his humor, strong in his opinions, but open to challenges, firm yet compassionate an interesting man always interested in others. Known as Bapa to his family, Emil A. Fleischauer will be deeply missed and never forgotten.

Emil is survived by his wife, Mary; daughters, Vicki, Madison and Missy, Spearfish, South Dakota; sons, Alan (Paula) Minneapolis, MN, Kirk, Wausau, and Mark (Kristin) of Vancouver, WA. He loved and enjoyed his grandchildren, Molly and Jesse, Alixandra, Emily, Christopher, Kari, Matt and Mason. He is also survived by his older sister, Grace (Cliff) Fonstad of Madison, and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial celebration will be held at a future date.
