Michael Matthew Philippi was born in the
town of Green Grove, Clark County, July 9, 1882. When he was about
one year old his parents moved to Colby, where he resided until he
came to this city in 1911. Graduating from the Colby High School in
1899, he taught school two years. During the school summer vacation
seasons, and until he entered the Railway Mail Service in 1915, he
followed carpenter work. During the first year in the mail service
he was a substitute clerk on the Soo Line between Chicago and
Minneapolis. Since then he has served as clerk on the North Western
Railway between Sheboygan and Merrillan, Eland and Merrillan, Eland
and Marshfield, and Marshfield and Fond du Lac. He has been
assigned the last named run since 1920.
Mr. Philippi was married to Miss Bessie
Jewell Markham of Augusta, in St. Mary’s Catholic Church at
Altoona, Wisconsin, by the Reverend H. P. Toeller, May 3, 1911.
Father Toeller now is the pastor of the Sacred Heart Catholic
Church in this city. Mr. and Mrs. Philippi have one child, Patrick
Fraternally, he is identified with John Eisen Council, Knights of Columbus, of which he is a charter member; the Colby Court, Catholic Order of Foresters; the local Camp Modern Woodmen of America; and the Wisconsin State Branch of the Railway Mail Association. He is a former clerk of the Colby Camp, which he served for five years. Politically, he is Independent. His hobbies are hiking in the woods and motoring.
