Gergen, Vernie (26 October 1865 - 1952)

 

The Press was unable last week to tell of the last rites for Vernie Gergen.

 

Pallbearers were: Charles Marden, Herbert Bardeleben, Charles Poole, P. C. Ludovic, Harry Roehrborn, and Donald Schiesel, all members of the American Legion Post.

 

Military rites were conducted by the Haugen-Richmond Post No. 73 of the American Legion. Color bearers were Ed Zschernitz and Joe Hartung.  Color guard, Gust Carl and Henry Naedler.  Bugler, Judith Paulson. Firing Squad, Herman Moen, Leon Stanley, Ernest Ott, Ernest C. Karnitz and Joe Cardarelle, Commander.

 

Floral offerings were in charge of Mrs. Hazel Schultz, Mrs. Betty Free, Mrs. Mable Ewing, Mrs. Janie Paulus and Mrs. Irene Hemp.

 

Miss Betty Jean Kosmosky sang two selections accompanied by Mrs. Virgil Nulton.

 

Persons from out of town attending the rites included: Mr. and Mrs. Orville Stone, Marian Lienwander and Mrs. Melvin Lienwander of Marshfield, Mrs. Vivian Dispenza and Merton Lee of Chicago, Ill., Mr. and Mrs. Donald Pamperin of Milwaukee, Mrs. Grace Lester, of Minneapolis, Sgt. Theron Gergen, U. S. Army, Fort Campbell, Ky., Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Christie, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Holt of Greenwood, and Mrs. M. J. Budde of Arpin.

 

Mr. Gergen was born on October 26, 1865, to William and Elizabeth (Bauchop) Gergen in the Town of Grant.  He spent his entire life in Clark County with the exception of service in World War I.  He entered service on March 27, 1917, and served overseas for 15 months being discharged on May 23, 1919.

 

On January 22, 1924, he was married to Isabelle McKimm at Neillsville.  He is survived by his wife and three children - Mrs. Tunis (Arlene) Baker of Tucson, Ariz.; Mrs. Donald (Thane) Pamperin of Milwaukee, and Theron V. Gergen, U. S. Army, Fort Campbell, Ky.; one sister, Mrs. Grace Lester, Minneapolis, Minn.; 10 grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and three step children, Mrs. Vivian Lienwander and Meron Lee of Chicago, and Mrs. F. (Lorraine) McClarlin of Tucson, Ariz.

 

He was preceded in death by three sisters, Mrs. Henry (Emma) Carlton, Mrs. Wheeler (Mary) Forman, Mrs. Francis (Margaret) Furlong, and four brothers, Al, Eddie, William and Alfred.
