Crockett, Benjamin B. #2 (26 NOV 1824 - 28 FEB 1908)

Benjamin B. Crockett was born on a farm in Maine on Nov. 26, 1824, died at Merrill Jan. 28, 1908 (article says Feb. 28, but since newspaper is from Feb. 6, that can’t be). He was married to Lucy R. Wilbur in April 1850, and he enlisted with Co. I 16th Reg., Maine Volunteers, serving three years in the war. He was in many large battles, including Gettysburg and Antietam. After the war he moved to Elmira, N.Y. and entered a machine shop, continuing there until 1870 when he came to Burr Oak Prairie, Wis. In 1870 he located on a homestead in Clark County and lived there until the death of his wife on Aug. 15, 1896. In 1897 he moved to Merrill, shortly after on April 12, 1898, being united in marriage to Mrs. Salisbury. To the first union eleven children were born, five of whom survive him, Augustine of New York, Mrs. Ella Dailey of Seattle, Wash., Miss Avis of Hornell, N.Y., O. A. of Neillsville and Edward of Moniva, Wash. One brother out of a family of 14 children also survive him, together with his wife at Merrill. Augustine Crockett was here to attend the funeral which was held at the Presbyterian Church last Saturday. Mr. Crockett was a man of great merit and had many sterling characteristics which made him many staunch friends in Clark County.
