Salo, Matt (11 JUL 1874 - 13 APR 1951)

Monday afternoon at two o’clock funeral services were conducted from Bethany Lutheran Church for Matt Salo, 76, who passed away at his home south of the city on Fri., April 13, 1951. The Rev. Isaacs officiated at the final rites and burial was made in Riverside Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were Kayo Maki, Uno Philip, Orville Philip, Adolph Haavisto, Uno Kolpanen and William Wirtala.

The deceased was born on July 11, 1874 at Kauhava, Finland. He came to America in 1899 and settled first at Bessemer, Mich. And later in 1911 moved to this community (Owen, Clark Co., Wis.) where he broke ground and established a successful farming venture south of the city, where he made his home until the time of his death. On June 15, 1900, while still residing in Bessemer, Mich., Mr. Salo was united in marriage to Mary Pelo, who survives him. The couple was blessed with five children, three of whom survive his passing into eternity. Last summer Mr. and Mrs. Salo happily enjoyed the observance of their 50tth wedding anniversary. He was a devoted father and provider of the home always practicing his Christian teachings. All the while he was a resident of this community he had been a faithful member and worker in the congregation of the Bethany Lutheran Church.

Mourning his passing are his wife, two daughters, Mrs. Jennie Porath and Lillian of Owen, two sons, Edwin at home and William of Milwaukee, and one sister who still resides in Finland.
