NEILLSVILLE -- Florence Evelyn Marty, 86, of Neillsville, passed away peacefully Tuesday, March 17, 2009, surrounded by family.

She was born Sept. 29, 1922, daughter of Julius and Jennie (Winton) Winter, town of Pine Valley. She grew up and attended school in the Columbia area, and was a 1941 graduate of Neillsville High School. She was united in marriage Oct. 17, 1941, to Fred Marty at the home of his parents in the Pleasant Ridge area. They lived in Granton from 1947 to 1990, then moved to Neillsville. Fred and Florence shared 58 wonderful years together, and were blessed with eight children.

Florence was a lady with many talents, a homemaker, and a great cook who worked at the Granton school kitchen for 23 years.

The cookie jar was always full whenever someone stopped in to visit. Her plum pudding was a Christmas treat. She enjoyed crocheting, even teaching her great-granddaughters how to crochet in her later years. Many games of cribbage and marbles were played with all ages of family members. Many enjoyable days were spent with her family members camping, fishing with the grandchildren, and at the school playgrounds.

Many delicious meals were prepared from the huge garden Mom oversaw. The pickle patch was notorious, especially the Green Crock Batch. Breads by the dozen, caramel and sweet rolls, soups and lasagna were some of her specialties.

She never forgot a birthday or special occasion and many letters were treasured. Mom's green thumb was seen in her many flowers.

Nothing was more important to Mom than her family.

She was a member of United Church of Christ, Neillsville.

Florence is survived by her eight children, Darrel (Aloma) Marty of Port Edwards, Judy (Don) Hillert of Mondovi, David (Debby) Marty of Marshfield, Cheryl (Jack) Downer of West Bend, Don (Phyllis) Marty of Neillsville, Sandra (Roy) Bieneck of Neillsville, Duane (Tammy) Marty of Neillsville, and Lori Pichla of Elmwood; 26 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She is further survived by two sisters, Clarice Lockman of Longview, Wash., and Grace (Ed) Schoen of Neillsville.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred, in 2001; her parents; three sisters, Alice, Edith and Vivian; and two brothers, Clifford and Arthur.

A funeral service celebrating Florence's life will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 20, at the United Church of Christ, Neillsville, with the Rev. James Mohr officiating.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Buchanan Funeral Home in Neillsville. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
