Schwantes, Herman W. (28 Oct. 1879 - 2 Apr. 1961)

Herman W. Schwantes died Sunday at 1:15 P.M. at the Marshfield, Wisconsin Hospital. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at Zion Lutheran church, Rev. William Christian officiating, and internment was made in the North Spencer cemetery. Pall bearers were Jerome Viegut, Ervin Viegut, Clarence Higedorn and Orville, Arland and Harold Westburg.

Mr. Schwantes was born in the town of Unity on Oct. 28, 1879. He married Dora Bruesewitz on November 6, 1905, in the town of Brighton. She died on Dec. 14, 1934. His second marriage took place on Oct. 19, 1943, to Mrs. Anna Westberg who survives him.

He worked as a carpenter up to the time of his retirement and farmed southeast of Spencer. He was a building contractor for 10 years and from 1938 to 1943 was employed at the Badger Ordnance Plant at Baraboo and at Joliet, Ill. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, the parish Men’s Club and Lutheran Laymen’s League. He was a quiet and unassuming person, friendly to everyone and will be missed by all who knew him.

Besides his wife, he is survived by a son, Theodore, of Dallas Texas; three daughters, Mrs. Ervin (Marilyn) Viegut of Athens, Mrs. Ervin (Lorraine) Schmidt of Stratford, and Mrs. Hilda Tews of Owen; three step sons, Orville Westberg of Colby, Harold and Erland Westberg of Oregon; a step daughter, Mrs. Lester Bruesewitz of Unity; three sisters, Mrs. Amelia Bruss of Colby, Mrs. Minnie Greeler of Neillsville and Mrs. Anna Pockat of Marion; five grand children and eight great grand children.
