Smith, Richard "Dick" L. (May 26, 1937 - February 12, 2009)

Richard L. "Dick" Smith, 71, Dorchester died Thursday, February 12, 2009 at the Colonial Center in Colby where he had resided since February 9, 2009.

Richard was born May 26, 1937 in Owen to George and Dora (Yates) Smith. He attended Dorchester Elementary School and later attended Dorchester High School.

He married Sherry Markwardt in Milwaukee and they later divorced.

Dick served his country by joining the Marine Corp from 1954-1956 and was assigned to basic infantry. After his honorable discharge he went to work in Milwaukee as a mechanic then later moved back to the area and worked as a mechanic at both Sebold Chevolet in Abbotsford and later at Medford Motors in Medford. Following that he became employed for the Village of Dorchester working in maintenance from 1974 -1993. Dick joined the Dorchester Fire Department in 1962 and held the position of fire chief from 1973-1989. In all, Dick gave 28 years of service in the Dorchester Fire Dept. In his spare time Dick enjoyed bowling, playing cards, deer hunting and fishing.

He is survived by his children; Pamela (William) Solberg, Syracuse, Ind.; James R. Smith, Dorchester, and Gregory Smith, Dorchester, Wis. He is further survived by his grandchildren; Shandah, Stephanie, Shelly, Christopher, Nathan, Caylie, Michael, Katie; and his great grandchildren, William, Kaitlyn, Daniel, Mia, Karly; and his siblings, Walter (Lois) Smith, Milwaukee, Larry (Bev) Smith, Dorchester, George W. "Bill" (Debbie) Smith, New Jersey, Elaine Sebold, Abbotsford, Mary (Clem) Klimpke, Dorchester and Kathleen Thorne, Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Diana; and a brother-in-law, Robert Sebold.

His funeral service will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Monday, February 16, 2009 at the Maurina-Schilling Funeral Home in Dorchester, Wis. The Rev. Mark Neumann will preside. Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. until time of service on Monday at the funeral home in Dorchester, Wis.

A private committal will take place in Dorchester Memorial Cemetery at a later date.
