Citizen of the year

Chamber Vice President Andy Baldus then introduced the citizen of the year. He said Vicky Calmes has exemplified public service through her work at the library, with 4-H and through the Rural Arts Museum. Through it all she has been helpful and patient.

"Like so many past recipients, she is a genuinely kind person," Baldus said.

Calmes said when she moved to Colby she was appointed to a position with a parents group though she was still unfamiliar with the area. It ended up changing her perspective on volunteerism.

"Luckily as a member of the parents group I grew and grew and grew," she said. Calmes said it helped her realize anyone could give their time for public service. Profession or age didn’t matter, she said, though she had the impression it was for people with light schedules.

When she became director of the library Calmes wanted to broaden its services. That’s evident as she helps organize two book clubs, continually expand the library’s options and helps host a variety of celebrations as it celebrates its 130th year.

"I determined it wasn’t just going to be a place to pick up books," she said.

The library is also changing again this week as it adds and upgrades its local and state history section. Visitors should see many more books as they walk in.

Calmes thanked her parents, husband and children who were all on hand to see her receive the award. She wished the next generation would follow in her footsteps with volunteerism.

"It’s my hope that when they grow up ... they realize public service is the way to go," she said.
