The birth entry from the family Bible reads:

"Archibald C. Ladd Sioux City Woodbury Co. Iowa March 18, 1886"

World War I Draft Registration shows Archie living in Centralia, Lewis County, Washington. His occupation is given as Laborer for the City of Centralia. His nearest relative is named as Mrs. Hazel Ladd. His signature is Archibald Carlile Ladd. The description of registrant is that he is tall, light grey eyes, light brown hair. The date of this registration is 12 September, 1918.

Archie’s Social Security application gives his residence as Chehalis, Washington. It confirms his birth information as given in the family Bible. He names his parents as Peter Albert Ladd and Affa Palmateer. Date of this application is 28 February, 1939.

In October of 1950 my grandfather, Albert Blakely, died in Washburn, Wisconsin. Albert and Gladness Ladd, Archie's sister, were married in September 1914. In January 1916, Bayfield, Wisconsin, Gladness died a week after giving birth to my mother, Marie Blakely. We lived in Kennewick Washington, and mother took the train back to Wisconsin to settle affairs. During sorting of paperwork, mother found an address book listing Archie's name. She had known of Archie's existence, but hadn't known anything more about him. When she got back to Washington state, she contacted him. In the fall of 1952, on the way to taking me to my first year of college in Tacoma, Washington, we stopped for a visit. Archie was a big man, with big hands. His comment to my brother, Ken, was that with a name like Archibald Carlisle, he'd better have big hands. He told Ken he was a brick mason. I remember him saying that his first wife, Hazel, had died and he married another woman named Hazel. Unfortunately, if there were pictures taken that day, I do not have any.

Obituary: Ladd Rite Wednesday

Centralia Daily Chronicle, 17 June 1968

"A former Twin City area resident, Archie C Ladd, 82, died in a Mount Vernon nursing home Saturday morning. Mr. Ladd, born March 18, 1886, in Sioux City, Iowa, came to the Centralia - Chehalis area in 1907. He moved to Stanwood nine years ago. The deceased was a mason by occupation.

Surviving are the widow, Hazel D., at the family home in Stanwood; a daughter, Mrs. Albert (Lola) Swanson, Warrenton, Ore.: son, Jay (Bud) Ladd, Chehalis; a stepdaughter, Mrs. George (Tina) Maker, Longview; two stepsons, Leo Porter, Renton and Robert Hendrix, Kent, 13 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services are Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the Boone chapel in Chehalis with the Rev William Mayoh officiating. Interment will be at Mountain View, Centralia. Casket bearers are Iver Floe, Jack Tedder, Harlan Roberts, Harry Thordie, Fred Radmacher and Dean Ellis."

I am grateful to have met Archie and to have shaken his hand. To have touched, literally, that generation of my ancestors is very special. I never knew my grandmother, Gladness, but I was privileged to meet her brother Archie.

Neillsville Press (Neillsville, Clark County, Wis.) Thursday, 09/14/1922

"Friends of Hazel Ladd of Centralia, Wash., will be greatly shocked to learn of her sudden death, which occurred Saturday, August 26, 1922. She was apparently in good health at her usual work on Thursday at the Superior Cafe. She was taken sick on Friday and died Saturday morning at 8:30 on her way to the hospital. Mrs. Ladd was born in Neillsville Sept. 8, 1889. In 1907 they came to La Center, Wash., lived there for three years and then moved to Centralia and lived there until the time of her death. She leaves to mourn her death, her husband, Archie Ladd, two children, Lola Marie and Jay P. Ladd, her father, Sam Shoop of Astoria, Ore., one brother, Archie Shoop of Portland, Ore., her aged grandmother, Mrs. Susan Shoop, of Spokane, Wash."

Note: Archie and Hazel Shoop married (likely in Sherwood Township) Clark County, Wisconsin and moved to Washington state in 1907, following Hazel’s graduation from school.
