Coyier, Shirley Mae (27 Apr. 1925 - 11 Aug. 2003)

April 27, 1925 — Aug. 11, 2003

Shirley Mae Coyier of Corvallis died Monday. She was 78.

She was born in Colby, Wis., to John M. and Harriet Peterson.

She married Duane Lee Coyier on June 28, 1947, in Neillsville, Wis.

She received a bachelor's degree in horticulture from the University of Wisconsin in 1949. She and her family moved to Hood River in 1960 and to Corvallis during the mid-1970s.

In 1986, she and her husband started Coyier's Roses on U.S. Highway 20, specializing in miniature roses. She worked as company manager until the time of her illness. Her family remembers her devotion to the family and her passion for environmental issues.

She was a member of Order of Eastern Star, Sierra Club, Nature Conservancy, Oregon Natural Resources Council and the Wilderness Society. She enjoyed gardening, camping, fishing and the mountains — especially skiing and hiking around Mount Hood. She also enjoyed ballroom dancing with her husband and playing the piano, particularly ragtime and classical music.

Survivors include her husband of 56 years; daughters, Marlene Turner of Corvallis and Kim Marshall of Eagle, Idaho; son, John of Corvallis; sister, Donna Rae Harder of Greenwood, Wis.; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Memorial donations can be made to the Oregon Natural Resources Council.
