Tobin, William (? - 20 Nov. 1934)

William Tobin, section foreman for the Soo Line at Prentice, was shot and killed Tuesday morning by robbers who attempted to take his car.

The shooting occurred while the two robbers were fleeing after a tavern and filling station holdup at Cozy Corners. The speeding car crashed into Tobin’s car which was parked along Highway 8. Tobin and relatives were visiting at the home of his brother-in-law and it was here the tragedy occurred. After the crash the bandits agreed to pay for the damage, but said they were in a hurry to transfer a load of liquor to another car. Tobin remarked that chisels and other tools in the robber’s car "didn’t look so good." Thereupon one of the fugitives drew a revolver and marched the men down the road.

Suddenly Tobin kicked the man’s weapon, whereupon the latter shot, the bullet entering Tobin’s chest. After the shooting the holdup men fled toward Rhinelander.

One slot machine and $50 in cash were taken in the tavern holdup.

The car in which the murderers of William Tobin escaped was found mired in the mud on a ? ? southwest of Rhinelander on Tuesday morning. In the car was the loot from the holdup and the four guns.

Frank ?, a former Stillwater inmate is being held in St. Paul for questioning in connection with the shooting. He however has denied guilt.
