Olson, Fred (17 Feb. 1882 - 30 Nov. 1957)

Fred Olson of Cherokee died Saturday afternoon at the Marshfield, Wisconsin Hospital where he had been a patient since October 21. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Zion Lutheran church, Rev. Pautsch of Marshfield officiating, and internment was made in the Colby (Colby, Clark Co. Wis.) Cemetery. Pall bearers were Keith Ven Rooy, Donald Ven Rooy, Bernard Reil, Lawrence Olson, Jr., Jorgan Ganz and Gerald Feldbrugge, all grand sons.

Mr. Olson was born in Curtiss on Febraury 17, 1882, and was educated in Colby, Wis. He married Sarah Tuttle on June 29, 1903, in Colby, Wis.

He engaged in farming and also was employed by the Wisconsin Central Railroad Company, now the Soo Line, until 1914 when he moved to Cherokee to purchase a saw mill which he operated for many years. He also operated threshing machines in the area and later went into the garage and farm machinery business at Cherokee.

He was very active in community and civic service and was held in high esteem by all who knew him. His community service included 32 years as school clerk and four years as chairman of the town of Hull. He was a member of the Marathon County Park Board for 17 years, of the Marathon County Draft Board for 12 years and of the Marathon County School Committee for 10 years. Being of a congenial, honest and friendly disposition, he always got along well with his associates in the various activities he was engaged in.

Surviving are his wife; seven children, Mrs. Harold (Winnifred) Striebe of Manhattan Beach, Calif., Mrs. Herman (Grace) Feldbrugge of Waunakee, Mrs. Norbert (Elva) Ven Rooy and Byron Olson of Colby, Wis. Mrs. Ben (Edith) Reil of Oshkosh, Mrs. Herman (Dorothy) Totzky of Stratford, Laurence Olson of Chippewa Falls, one brother; Oluf Olson, of Neillsville; 28 grand children and 31 great grand children. One son, Elroy, preceded him in death.

J. Horgen, Dan Genrich, Wm.
