Krueger, Frank & Leslie (Seeking Pardon - MAR 1929)

Frank and Leslie Krueger of Withee (Clark Co., Wis.), now serving life sentences at Waupun for murder in connection with draft evasion, are seeking a pardon. Their application is to be heard by the board of pardons on March 13. The Krueger family, living on a farm near Withee, were among the so-called conscientious objectors to the draft. When served with draft papers, Frank Krueger failed to report. Station Agent Jensen of Withee went with a deputy marshal and others of a party to bring the evader in. In the fight that ensued Jensen and one of the Krueger brothers were killed. Frank Krueger was wounded and captured. Leslie escaped with another brother, who was killed a few days later in a barn to which he had been traced. About a year afterward Leslie was captured in Chippewa Falls, taken to Neillsville and sentenced to life imprisonment at Waupun. The case attracted a great deal of attention in 1918. Feelings ran high against the Krueger family. The attorney for Frank and Leslie will argue that his clients have been sufficiently punished. Leslie is now in the asylum for the criminally insane at Waupun. An effort is being made to have him transferred to some institution that has no criminal singificance.
