Clifford Harmon, 84, of Neillsville died Thursday, July 3, 2008, at his home in Neillsville.

Clifford Clyde Harmon was born July 31, 1923, in Oak Ridge, the Town of Manchester, Jackson County, the son of Claude and Mayme (Erickson) Harmon. He attended a country school in the Shamrock area and then worked on the family farm to provide for himself, since both of his parents died by the time he was 13. Cliff then enlisted into the United States Army and served in World War II in the Pacific Theatre. Upon returning to the Black River Falls area after his honorable discharge, Cliff drove gravel truck for Jessop. In 1948, he was united in marriage to Lois Faye Narron. They later divorced. Cliff began a career in the meat-cutting business, first for Kroger IGA in Tomah and from 1958 until his retirement for Copp’s in Stevens Point. He moved to Neillsville in 1993.

Cliff loved to build things. In his spare time he was a master craftsman. He was very active with the Lions Club in Stevens Point and extremely active with The Highground in Neillsville as a greeter. He was a member of the Haugen-Richmond American Legion Post #73 in Neillsville.

He is survived by two daughters, Debra (John Kappen) Harmon of Augusta and Brenda Hemstrom of Neillsville; five grandchildren, Colin (Michelle) Bigalke, Joshua (Trudy) Hemstrom, Sarah Hemsttom, Megan Hemstrom, and Jennifer (Jason) Helmer; two great-grandchildren, Ben and Sydney Bigalke; a sister, Marian (Del) Harelson of Black River Falls; a very special friend, Joan Mallory of Neillsville; and his dog, Snoopy.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Robert Bigalke; and a brother, Floyd Harmon.

Funeral services for Cliff were held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 7, 2008, at The Highground in Neillsville. Interment was in the Shamrock Union Cemetery in Shamrock (Jackson County).

Casketbearers were Paul Hemstrom, Joe Coady, Mike Bigalke, Colin Bigalke, Josh Hemstrom and Gary Anding.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Wisconsin Lions Camp for the Blind or the Lions Leader Dogs for the Blind Program.
