Geiger, John E. (5 JUL 1865 - 19 OCT 1946)

John Edward Geiger, 81, passed away at his home in Thorp (Clark Co., Wis.), Saturday, Oct. 19th, 1946, following a long illness.

John Edward Geiger was born July 5, 1865 at Cassville, Grant Co., Wis., the son of John and Josephine Geiger. His boyhood was passed in the village where he attended the Cassville Public School.

In Dec. 1881 when he was sixteen years of age he went to Lansing, Iowa to learn the trade of cabinetmaking. In 1883, having completed his two-year apprenticeship, he went to Madison, Wis., where his mother and part of his family were temporarily living. Here he studied bookkeeping nights at the Northwest Business College and worked as pattern maker for the Madison Manufacturing Co. and the Lake City Tool Co. This latter concern became the Duplex Manufacturing Co., which moved to Brooklyn, Wis. in Feb. of 1886. In March 1886 he went to Brooklyn, where he worked for the Duplex Manufacturing Co. Oct. 27, 1887, he was united in marriage to Gertie A. Andrew. To this union was born one son, Vivian.

The intervening years, 1886 to 1899 they lived in Brooklyn, except one years, 1893, when he and his wife lived in Janesville, Wis., where he was employed.

In 1895 he went to work for Fairbanks, Morse & Co. at Beloit, Wis., as the Duplex Manufacturing Co. had moved to Superior, Wis. two years previous.

Health compelled a change of location, so in December 1899 he came to Thorp and purchased a farm just outside the northeast village limits. This farm he had some time previously bought from Mr. and Mrs. A.A. Arnold. They operated this farm until the summer of 1913 when the family moved to the village, having sold the farm. The family moved to the village in the late autumn and the next summer they built a home which they have since occupied.

Mr. Geiger was cashier of the Farmer’s Exchange Bank for sixteen months and President for one years. During the years 1916 to 1932, he worked at his original trade of cabinetmaking and furniture repairing, until heart trouble compelled him to quit in 1932. He taught manual training in Thorp High School during 1918. He served the east Thorp Cemetery Association as Secretary for nine years, from 1924 to 1933. He also served as trustee of the Thorp Methodist Church for about twenty-seven years, and was also secretary and treasurer of the Thorp Public Library from May 1931 to June 1934.

He passed away the morning of Oct. 19, 1946, having reached the age of eighty-one years, three months and fourteen days. He leaves to mourn, one son, Vivian, and a sister, Miss Pauline A. Geiger of Cassville, Wis.

Services were conducted by Rev. Jas. Irish for the deceased at the Thorp Methodist Church at 2:00 o’clock Monday afternoon. The remains were taken to Brooklyn, Wis., on Tuesday and services conducted by Rev. Walter Snow there. Interment took place in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Brooklyn. Pallbearers were: Chas. Ramberg, Alfred Burkhardt, C.C. Guell, Wm. J. Klouda, John Wojcik and Isaac Sisco.
