Howard, George Robert (22 Aug. 1862 - 11 Feb. 1945)

Funeral services for George R. Howard, 82, of Neillsville, were conducted on Wednesday afternoon, February 14, at the Lowe funeral home. The Rev. Floyd A. Fahlgren, pastor of the Methodist church, officiated, assisted by the Rev. George W. Longenecker, pastor of the Congregational church. Burial took place in the town of Grant cemetery. Mr. Howard died at 1 a.m. Sunday, February 11, at his home in Neillsville, death resulting from a stroke which he suffered about a month ago.

George Howard, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Howard, pioneer residents of Clark county, was born August 22, 1862, in the town of Grant, where he resided his entire life, with the exception of the last four months, which he spent in Neillsville. He received his education in the Grant schools. The year he was 10 years of age, he attended the Clark county fair, and has attended every fair since. For many years he has been a stockholder of the fair association.

On May 6, 1885, he was united in marriage with Caroline Lichte, at Neillsville. Five children were born to them and with their mother survive. The children are: Mrs. Ethel Geisler, Chicago; Archie Howard, Marshfield; Mrs. Gertrude Martin, at home; Vern and Alva Howard, town of Grant. There are 14 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. One sister, Mrs. Edward Selves, town of Grant, also survives. His parents and three brothers, John, Leonard and Charles, and a sister, Mrs. Mary Blackman, are deceased.

Mr. Howard was engaged in farming all of his life. Early in his life, he spent 21 winters working in logging camps. He was a member of the Modern Woodmen, and was a respected and honored citizen of the community.
