Filipowicz, Joseph F. (24 JUN 1870 - 20 JUN 1946)

Joseph F. Filipowicz, a resident of the Town of Withee (Clark Co., Wis.) for over 56 years, passed away at the hospital at Stanley on Thursday, June 20, 1946, death being caused by old age infirmities. He had reached the age of 76 years, 11 months and 26 days.

Mr. Filipowicz was born in Biala, Poland on June 24, 1870. He was united in marriage there on Feb. 2, 1889 to Mary Staroslec. They came to America in May 1892 and resided for two years in Chicago. In May 1894 they came to Thorp and settled on a piece of land in what is now the Town of Withee. It was a wilderness then with nothing but a deer path to travel. He worked hard with other pioneers to make it what it is today.

Mr. Filipowicz was a member of St. Hedwig’s Catholic Parish for 50 years and of the St. Joseph’s Society for over forty years.

He is survived by his widow and three sons, Anthony of Seattle, Wash., and Walter and Stanley at home; seven daughters, Frances, Mrs. Konstanty Ciok, Anna, Mrs. Stanley Persak and Julia, Mrs. Wm. Slavicka, of Gilman, Wis.; Stella, Mrs. John Loferski, Harriet, Mrs. Peter Lukasiewicz of Thorp; Helen, Mrs. Wm. Heyke, and Mrs. Victoria Adams of Chicago. One daughter Mary, Mrs. Ben Glick, a twin sister of Walter, died at the age of 34 in Chicago, 1936. Also surviving are 15 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at St. Hedwig’s Church on Monday morning, June 24th, the birthday of the deceased. The requiem Mass was conducted by Father F. Piekarski, assisted by Father Raymond Rucki and Father Kamla, of Junction. Interment took place in the parish cemetery, the following friends acting as pallbearers: Ig. Przybylski, Andrew Strzok, Leon Andruskiewicz, Stanley Neiman, Frank Neiman and Peter Mikrut.
