Schmidt, Jack Lyman (24 July 1946 - 3 April 2008)

Jack L. Schmidt, 61, Town of York, rural Loyal, died at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield Thursday, April 3, 2008.

Jack Lyman Schmidt was born July 24, 1946, in Neillsville to Henry and Marjorie (Chase) Schmidt. He was raised on the family farm in the Town of York and received his education in the Loyal area, graduating from Loyal High School in 1965. Jack worked on the family farm and at Gunia Cheese Factory during his high school years.

In 1966, he entered the U. S. Marine Corps and served in Vietnam as an anti-tank assault man. Jack spent 13 months in Vietnam and was wounded twice, the second time severely. He was transported back to the states and hospitalized for almost a year. For his bravery, Jack was rewarded the Purple Heart. After discharge, he moved back to Loyal and worked at Gunia Cheese during tax time, helping his mother prepare the taxes.

He was united in marriage to Deb Truchinski April 26, 1974, at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Loyal. They later divorced. Jack never worked due to his physical disability from the war; however, he really enjoyed driving tractor and helping out on his brother’s and brother-in-law’s farms. Jack married Pamela Fox August 13, 1996, in Kahoka, MO. They lived in the Town of York, rural Loyal, until his death.

He was a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church and the Loyal American Legion Post #175. Jack had many interests but especially loved spending time with his grandkids, family and friends, bowling, playing pool and playing cards.

He will be sadly missed by his wife, Pamela of Loyal; three children, Melissa Schmidt (fiancé Scott Bahr) of Neillsville, Philip Schmidt (fiancé Terri Weinfurter) of Sherry and Kip Schmidt (special friend heather Copeland) of Osseo; two grandchildren, Shylan and Jada Salisbury; three sisters, Jill (Harry) Grossbier of De Pere; Jana Snyder of Neillsville; June (Roger) Erickson of Neillsville; one brother, Jerry Schmidt (special friend Amanda McDonald) of Neillsville; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Jean Schmidt; one niece, Tonya Grossbier; and two nephews, Trent Grossbier and Perry Sischo.

Funeral Services were held Tuesday, April 8, 2008, at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, Loyal, with Fr. Roman Kaiser officiating. Burial will take place in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Neillsville, at a later date.

Cuddie Funeral Home, of Loyal assisted the family with arrangements.
