Mellenthin, Herman (4 July 1887 - 19 May 1926)

Herman Mellenthine (Mellenthin), age 38 years, was found dead on his farm about five miles south of Spencer, Wisconsin yesterday. The indications are he met death while engaged in the work of blasting stumps, on which he began, early in the morning of that day. His body was discovered by his son, Norbert, age 10 years, when he went to the scene of his father’s labor, in response to a request of his mother, to call him for dinner. Horrified to find his father lifeless, he hurried back to tell his mother, who, after summoning some neighbors to accompany her, went to the scene of the accident to verify the boy’s story. A doctor from Spencer was summoned, but the unfortunate man was beyond medical help. The body was taken charge of by an undertaker of Spencer.

As near as is known Mr. Mellenthin was alone at the time of the accident. The place of the accident is about a half-mile from his house. He had a bad wound in his abdomen and both his arms below the elbow were off. Since the accident was without witnesses, it is not known definitely how it happened, but the opinion is the explosive became discharged while he had it in his hand.

The deceased had been a resident of the Spencer section for a number of years. Surviving him are his widow and four children, Bernice, Lucille, Norbert and Marcella, ranging in ages from seven to 15 years. He also leaves four brothers and four sisters.

The funeral will be held from the home of Mrs. (Sabina Hoops) Mellenthin’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Hoops, in Spencer, at 2 o’clock tomorrow afternoon, Rev. Wegner of the Lutheran church of Spencer officiating.
