She was born Ella E. Wiersig in the town of Hull, Marathon County, on March 6, 1917, to the late Ewald R. and Emma (Hass) Wiersig. She married Elmer E. Wellman on July 9, 1942, at Zion Lutheran Church in Colby, Wis. She worked a brief time at a shoe factory in Marshfield. In 1945, she and Elmer purchased a farm in the town of Hull and farmed until retirement in 1977, soon after which they moved to the city of Colby, Wis.

Ella was a member of Christ Lutheran Church. She loved tending her summer flower garden, playing cards, working jigsaw puzzles, and word search puzzles. This past summer she still insisted on mowing her own lawn because operating the riding lawn mower was such fun.

Ella is survived by her children, Gloria (Norm) Bachmann, of Murrieta, Calif., Roger Wellman of Unity, LeRoy Wellman of Spencer, Sharon Franklin of Madison, Wayne (Christine) Wellman of Kingston, Ill., Bonnie Schultz of Abbotsford, Randy (Shirley) Wellman of Colby; 17 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Hilda (Leonhard) Dommer of Colby and Olga Behrens of Colby; and three sisters-in-law, Frieda Wellman of Oshkosh, Hilda Koch of Wausau and Lydia Wellman of Marshfield.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband on July 24, 1993; one grandson, Matthew Wellman; one sister, Frieda Wiersig; and two brothers, Reinhardt and Harold Wiersig.

In lieu of flowers the family would like donations to be made to the Lutheran Hour Ministries.
