Scheel, Leonard W. (29 March 1913 - ? Jan. 1944)

Funeral service for Lt. Leonard W. Scheel were held in the Catholic Church at Turtle Lake, Wis., on Wednesday January 19, 1944. Lt. Scheel was in the U. S. Coast Guard, and had been on Federal patrol for some time, but had been called in with a group of other men to the training station at Fort McHenry, Baltimore, Md., for a course of specialized training. He fell from a ladder, suffering a fractured skull and passed away at the marine hospital at Baltimore. He was to have been a captain at the end of this training period.

Leonard was born in Turtle Lake, Wis., on March 29, 1913, and was at the time of his death almost 31 years of age. When a small boy, his parents moved to Neillsville, where his father was engaged in the creamery business, and erected the building now occupied by the Milk Pool. Leonard attended the Neillsville public school and went with his parents to Augusta, where he graduated from high school in 1932. His studies at a law school in Minneapolis were interrupted by the war, but it was his plan to finish the course when the war was won. He was a young man of sterling character, and was held in high esteem by friends and associates.

His father and mother and five brothers and sisters are deceased. He is survived by his step-mother; Mrs. Ruth Scheel, Milwaukee; a sister, Mrs. Helen Johnson, Des Moines, Iowa; and a step-brother, James Sullivan, who is in the U. S. Army service in Illinois. Mrs. Ed. Gall, Mrs. Mary Dudei, Mrs. Theodore Kalsow, and Mrs. Lena Scheel, all of Milwaukee, are aunts of the deceased.

A military funeral was given him, and it was attended by several of his law school classmates. Burial took place at Turtle Lake. Relatives from Neillsville who attended the funeral services were Mrs. Mary Dudei, Mrs. Ed. Gall, Mrs. Fred Appleyard, Miss Louis Scheel, Theodore Kalsow and Hilmer Dudei, who was here on leave from Great Lakes navel training station.
