The James Gomez family of Granton has been selected as part of a group of seven winners in the 1964 Milwaukee Journal “Favorite Families of Wisconsin” contest.

Lynn Jenkins nominated the Gomez family.

A panel of independent judges chose these families on the basis of interpersonal communication and family cooperation. They have demonstrated a genuine commitment to family values through the nurturing and support of family members. In addition, these families have made a valuable contribution to others in their community and neighborhood.

The winners will receive $100, a personalized plaque, and special honors at a family awards breakfast at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Milwaukee on Sunday, November 4. They will also be recognized as distinguished guests during the up opening ceremonies of Family Fest ’84 that afternoon.

Family Fest ’84 is a program dedicated to family learning and growth, sponsored by the UW-Extension office in Milwaukee and various other family and service organizations.

Neillsville Memorial Hospital & Home (Burns Mortgage - 1984)

It will be a very special day on Sunday, November 4 for Neillsville Memorial Hospital and Home.

That day marks the 30th birthday for the health care facility, and it also is the day when the institution becomes debt free.

The day’s activities begin at 1:00 p.m. when tours will be offered. The 2 1/2 hours of tours will allow visitors an opportunity to review recent remodeling projects and to learn more about some of the technologically advanced equipment now in use at the facility. According to administrator Glen Grady, set for inspection will be the mobile CAT scanner, ultra-sound equipment, vascular lab testing, new x-ray units and cardio-testing equipment.

Also set for viewing is a remodeled emergency room, recovery room, nursing stations and patient rooms.

The day will conclude at 3;45 p.m. when a mortgage burning ceremony is scheduled. Participating will be present and former hospital board presidents: they include Herb Smith, Herb Puscheck, Frank Svetlik, W.H. Allen and Richard Urban. (Deceased presidents are Walter Brown and Herman North.)

Grady said that the hospital and home at one time carried mortgages in excess of $1.26 million, most of it borrowed in 1963 and 1966.That debt has been paid back, the administrator reported.

The hospital was formed when 170 private and business contributors donated $500 each to form the health care facility in 1954.
