Clark County authorities are investigating the death of a seventy year-old rural Withee man who died early Tuesday morning. June 25, 2002, as a result of an apparent traffic incident. Authorities were notified at approximately 3:10 a.m. that a vehicle was on fire on Sterling Avenue south of Highway 29, in the Town of Reseburg. Upon reaching the scene, Sheriff’s Deputies and the Thorp Volunteer Fire and Ambulance Department found the body of a man inside the vehicle.

Investigation at the scene indicates that a vehicle driven by Gene A. Stigen, 70 of N14527 Sterling Avenue, Withee, left the roadway on Sterling Avenue, which is located about five miles east of Thorp. Tracks at the scene show that the vehicle came to rest in a field after the driver made some attempts to exit the ditch/field area. At this time, it is unknown whether the vehicle was actually stuck. It appears as though the driver remained in the vehicle, allowing it to run. At the scene, it appeared that the vehicle caught fire after tall grass ignited near the vehicle. No one else was in the vehicle with the deceased. The death of the man is believed to have been caused by the fire.
