NEILLSVILLE WINS AND UNITY LOSES (10 Dec. 1931)

Basket ball fans who attended the games at the Armory Wednesday evening certainly got their money’s worth in the two games that were pulled off at that time.

The first game between the Unity city team and the Battery Reserves was a close contest all the way along. At the end of the first quarter the score was 3 to 2 and at the half 7 to 4, and at the end of the third period was still close, being 11 and 7. During the last quarter the Reserves added 6 points making them 16, while the Unity boys were adding 8 points to their 7, bringing them up to 15.

In the Reserve lineup was Waech, Garbrecht, Fiebig, Oleson, Thomas and Laabs.

On the Unity team were G. Misener, Messer, Sorenson, W. Misener and Wilson.

Hills and Enman were on the job with the whistles.

The main bout of the evening was between the Neillsville Service Co. team and the local Hq. Battery boys and started off with a wow. Referee Paynter called the players to time early in the game for roughness, but it didn’t seem to do much good.

Neillsville was the first to score, getting two baskets before the locals scored. McDonald started the scoring with a free throw and the first quarter ended with Abbotsford in the lead with a 10 to 7 tally.

In the second quarter the visitors added 10 points and the locals 5, bringing the scores to 15 and 17 at the half.

On resuming play in the third quarter Neillsville staged a real spurt at scoring and that period ended with a 17 to 28 count and at the end of the game the old score board read 27 to 34 with Abbotsford on the small end.
