Russell, Mark H. (15 Nov. 1924 - 21 May 1955)

Mark H. Russell of Neillsville, Wisconsin, age 30, state conservation game warden, stationed at Neillsville since 1950, drowned Sunday afternoon in Pike Lake, north of Boyd in Chippewa Falls, when he and James Borusky of Stanley, about 30, a fellow game warden, were thrown from their motor-driven canoe while checking the licenses of fishermen.

According to reports, Russell and Borusky had just checked the licenses of two fishermen and were leaving them when their metal canoe tipped, throwing both men into the lake. The motor was running and the canoe went some distance from the men before it capsized.

Men in a nearby boat took Borusky from the water but they could not reach Russell in time to save him. Russell, it was reported, was unable to swim.

His body was recovered at 6:40 P.M. from about 30 feet of water, nearly 200 yards from shore, according to James Whealon, Eau Claire county warden, who was at the scene. Wardens from several other counties in the area were notified of the accident and joined in dragging operations. A bruise on Russell’s shoulder led to the belief that he may have been stunned when thrown from the canoe.

Russell’s wife was staying with Mrs. Borusky in Stanley at the time of the accident. Russell and his wife were residents of Chippewa Falls before moving to Black River Falls in 1950 and then to Neillsville a short time later.

Surviving are his wife, his mother, Mrs. Mark H. Russell, Sr., of Chippewa Falls, and one sister, Mrs. Joseph Matschee of Cadott. His father and one sister preceded him in death.
