Swim, John V. (12 AUG 1871 - 10 DEC 1941)

John VanRancler Swim, retired railroad man, passed away at his home in the village (Thorp, Clark Co., Wis.) on Wednesday, Dec. 10, 1941, death being caused by heart disease. He had reached the age of 70 years and 4 months.

Mr. Swim was born in Kat..?, New York on Aug. 12, 1871. He came to Hebron, Wis., while still a young man and was there united in marriage to Grace Van Wermer on Nov. 11, 1895. They resided on a farm near Cadott for several years and also at Redville, where Mr. Swim was employed in a sawmill and followed that occupation in the stave factory when he and his family moved to Thorp in January 1912. With the passing of the stave factory he became employed on the railroad here and seven years ago moved with his family to Waukesha, where he worked as flagman for five years. On his retirement from the railroad he returned to Thorp to spend the rest of his days.

A quiet, peaceful citizen, who had not an enemy in the world, the deceased will be sadly missed by his many friends and fellow workers.

He is survived by his widow, two sons, Elmer of Mendota, Wis., and Harley E. of Thorp; five daughters, Maud (Mrs. Jos. F. Yager) of Gilman, Myrtle (Mrs. Andrew Kubera), Thorp, Florence (Mrs. Walter Restall) and Isabel (Mrs. Nick Congemi) of Waukesha, and Elda (Mrs. Ralph Bigelow) of Eau Claire; two brothers, Ole Swim and Myron Swim of Cadott.

Last rites were conducted by Rev. Fischer of Hannibal at the Methodist Church at Thorp on Saturday afternoon at two o’clock, interment taking place in the East Thorp Cemetery. Pallbearers were members of the Sons of Union Veterans to which organization the deceased belonged. They were: John Rossman, Ed Fenstermacher, Walter Rohn, Amos and Isaac Sisco, and E.J. Nimbar.
