Smart, Alfred (29 Sept. 1870 - 4 Oct. 1954)

Alfred Smart, one of the early settlers of this community, died at the home of his son, Donald Smart, in the town of Hull, Wisconsin, Monday, Oct. 4, at 6:30 P.M. at the age of 84 years and three days. Funeral services will be held at the Lulloff Funeral Home this Thursday afternoon at 2:00 o’clock and burial will be made in the Colby (Colby, Clark Co. Wis.) Cemetery.

Mr. Smart was born on September 29, 1870, in Plymouth and came to this community with his parents when eight years of age. At that time, this was still a vast wilderness and the mode of travel was by ox teams. He married Alvina Graumann of the town of Hull on December 12, 1891. She died on January 15, 1934.

Besides his wife, one daughter also preceded him in death.

Surviving are three sons and three daughters - Benjamin of Milwaukee, Charles of Colby, Donald of Colby, Mrs. Walter (Edith) Wurthmann of Wausau, Mrs. Mike (Evelyn) Nehring of Edgar and Mrs. William (Ruth) Laughead of Abbotsford, Wis. Also 13 grand children and 18 great grand children.

Like all early settlers, Mr. Smart was of a congenial and honest disposition so friendship circle to him was a large one although most of his old friends had already passed away. Those who knew him will always remember him as a man who lived a just and upright life, always endeavoring to perform his duties to the best of his ability.
