Etiquette of the Flag

The Woman’s Auxiliary of Otto A. Haugen Post of the American Legion (Neillsville, Wis.) is desirous of assisting schools and the public as to the proper manner in which to display the American flag and the respect due this national emblem. However, the only change in the old order is in the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag.

It is no longer proper to extend the right hand in salute when reciting the Pledge. All that is required in the new law is for those taking part in the Pledge to stand, with the right hand over the heart. This position is held until the end, when the hand is dropped to the side. Persons in uniform render the right hand salute.

The Service Flag, for the immediate family, may be displayed by the mother, father, wife, son, daughter, brother, sister or husband of the person in the armed service.

The flag to be displayed by a family or member of the family consists of a blue star on a white rectangle field with a red border. The number of stars will correspond to the number of individuals from the immediate family who are symbolized on the flag.

If the individuals symbolized are killed or dies while serving from causes other than dishonorable, the star representing that individual will have superimposed thereon a gold star of smaller size so that the blue forms a border to the gold star.

The flag, when horizontally displayed, will have the stars arranged in a horizontal line or lines with one point of each star up. When vertically displayed, the stars will be displayed in a vertical line or lines with one point of each star up.
