Lyons, James Edwin (23 June 1857 - 1 June 1943)

James Edwin Lyons died at the Marshfield hospital Tuesday night at 9:20 P.M., a broken hip and old age complications being the cause of his departure to the distant shore. He fell last week Wednesday afternoon and broke his hip as he missed a chair when he was going to sit down. He was taken at once to the Marshfield hospital. Funeral services will be held at the Lulloff Funeral Home Friday morning, June 4th, at 10 o’clock and internment will be made in the Colby cemetery.

Mr. Lyons was born on June 23, 1857, in Glasgow, Scotland, thus reaching the age of 85 years, 11 months and eight days. He came to the United States when 11 years of age and lived at Appleton until 44 years ago when he came to Colby, Wis. He was married to Katherine Bowser in Sheboygan county in 1883.

Surviving are three grand children - Paul, James and Mary Umhoefer. Also three great grand children - Stephen, Paul, Jr., and Philip Umhoefer. Mrs. Lyons and two children, Frank and Mary, preceded him in death.

Mr. Lyons was engaged in the flour and feed business, for many years in Colby, Wis., and for about twenty years in Unity, Wis. He was active in public affairs and politics. He was mayor of the city of Colby for 12 years, assemblyman from Clark county for two years, alderman in the city of Appleton for four years before he came to Colby, Wis. He was elected a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1932 which nominated F. D. Roosevelt for president the first time. He was a man of strong convictions, honest in all his dealings, loyal to his family and friends.

Mr. Lyons will be missed by many as he was very active and a familiar person about town despite his advanced age.
