Helen K. Allen

Mrs. Helen K. Allen -- Age 94; A native of Thorp, Wisconsin and a longtime resident of Mobile, Alabama died Friday, May 12, 2006.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Othema L. 'Hank'' Allen.

She is survived by her sons, Jerald T. Allen, of Mobile, AL and Patrick J. (Mary) Allen, of Baker, LA; her sister, Mrs. Aldona Travis, of Summerdale, AL; two grandchildren, nephews and nieces.

In 1936, Mrs. Allen graduated from the Mobile General Hospital School of Nursing and worked at the hospital until 1937. From 1937 to 1942 she worked at Charity Hospital in New Orleans while attending Tulane University and Louisiana State University. She received her B. S. Degree in Nursing Education in 1949 and returned to Mobile General Hospital as a nursing instructor. She remained there until the hospital closed. She spent the remainder of her career at the Mobile Infirmary School of Nursing, retiring in 1977. After retirement, Mrs. Allen performed volunteer work at the Little Sisters of the Poor. She often remarked that this was one of the most fulfilling parts of her life. She was a member of Saint Joseph Jesuit Catholic Church since 1932 and attended Mass regularly. She held a number of offices in various nursing organizations locally, statewide and nationally, an remained active in the Retired Registered Nurses Association until the present.

Funeral services will be held at 12 Noon on Monday, May 15, 2006 from the chapel of Radney Funeral Home, Dauphin Street. The family will receive friends from 10 A. M. until 12 Noon on Monday at the funeral home. Interment will be in Valhalla Memorial Gardens. Funeral arrangements by RADNEY FUNERAL HOME, 3155 Dauphin Street, Mobile, Alabama 36606.
