Gertrude Vogel was born on June 22, 1908, in Loyal, to Frank and Lida (nee Clouse) Vogel. She was raised on the family farm and received her education in the Loyal area. She married Frank J. Degenhardt on April 30, 1924, at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, Loyal. They moved to Milwaukee for five years and then returned to Loyal where her husband farmed with his father until 1934. They purchased a bar in Loyal, which they called "Frank’s Bar," now "Shelby’s," and operated it for 40 years until retiring in 1974. After retiring, she spent much of her time quilting (she made quilts for all of her grandchildren), sewing, cooking and baking. Her husband, Frank, died on Dec. 2, 1993. She continued to reside in Loyal until moving to the Angelus Retirement Community, Neillsville, in 2002. She entered the Neillsville Memorial Home in December 2003, and resided there until her death. She was a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church and its P.C.C.W.

She will be sadly missed by her children, Albert Degenhardt, Milwaukee, Don (Kathy) Degenhardt, Green Bay, Ken (Lois) Degenhardt, Milwaukee, Harvey (Bonnie) Degenhardt, Darlene Klann-Dousman, Sue Kohlnhofer, Brookfield, and Nancy Schmidt, Waukesha; 32 grandchildren; 65 great-grandchildren; 40 great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Frank; two brothers; and one sister.

Cuddie Funeral Home, Loyal, is assisting the family with arrangements.
