Lato, Kathern "Kate" E. (June 10, 1914 - September 19, 2007)

Kathern "Kate" E. Lato, age 93, of Thorp, died at Our Lady of Victory Hospital, in Stanley, on Wednesday, September 19, 2007. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 22, 2007 at St. Bernard-St. Hedwig Catholic Church in Thorp. Fr. Keith Apfelbeck officiated and burial followed in Old St. Hedwig Catholic Cemetery. Visitation was held at Thorp Funeral Home on Friday, September 21, 2007 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., with a 7:00 p.m. Rosary service and at church, on Saturday, from 9:30 a.m. until time of service.

Kathern E. Rogus was born on June 10, 1914, in rural Greenwood, WI, to Joseph and Josephine (Sapa) Rogus. She was raised and received her education in the Greenwood area. Kate was united in marriage to John Lato on August 8, 1931 at St. Hedwig Catholic Church, rural Thorp. She was a homemaker, raising six children, and also worked at the Ben Franklin store and later at the Thorp IGA. Her husband John died on September 29, 1966. Kate continued to reside in Thorp until entering Oakbrook Health & Rehab in January of 2005. She was a member of St. Bernard-St. Hedwig’s Catholic Church and its PCCW, a member of the Clark County Homemakers, and enjoyed quilting, dancing and playing cards. Kate was a 30-year member of the Oakland Homemakers Hobo Band.

She is survived by six children: Amelia Haider of Minneapolis, MN, Walter Lato of Cornell, WI, Edward (Rita) Lato of Aurora, CO, Leo (Rita) Lato of Nixa, MO, Genevieve (Robert) Krause of Golden Valley, MN, George (Twyla) Lato of Muskego, WI; 21 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren, and 21 great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Sophie Letvinuck of Lombard, IL.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John; two brothers and two sisters.
