Warner, Sylvanus S. #2 (1 APR 1846 - 5 JAN 1939)

Sylvanus S. Warner was born in Town of Therese, Jefferson Co., New York, April 1, 1846, and died at his home in the village of Thorp (Clark Co., Wis.) at 8:15 p.m., Jan. 5, 1939.

He was married to Phebe Jane Warden at Laforgeville, New York, Oct. 20, 1866. They came to Wisconsin in 1869 and located near Mauston. In 1874 they came to northern Clark County and settled on a homestead near the present site of Eidsvold, where they resided for 40 years. They moved to Thorp 25 years ago this coming spring. Mrs. Warner died in 1930. Since then his daughter, Mrs. Susan Allen, has lived with him and helped to maintain his home.

He served in Co. F. 20th New York Cavalry volunteers during the Civil War. Was a member of the Asbrae Welcome post of the G.A.R. at Thorp. After this post disbanded he joined Eagle Post N. 52 of Eau Claire. He was the last remaining Civil War Veteran in Thorp and the oldest continuous resident of Thorp territory.

He is survived by five children, Bill Warner of the town of Thorp, Mrs. Abi Tunison of Jump River, Mrs. Elizabeth Powell of Mobridge, S.D., Mrs. Lucinda Brown of Harlingen, Texas and Mrs. Susan Allen of Thorp, 17 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren and many other relatives.

The funeral was held at the home Sunday at 2 p.m., Rev. Wendell Bennets of Plainfield delivered the sermon. Eagle Post G.A.R. of Eau Claire assisted by Sons of Veterans of Thorp and Eau Claire performed the ritual work of the G.A.R. About 20 members of the American Legion Post of Thorp and Stanley performed military services at the grave in Eidsvold Cemetery, which included firing a salute and sounding taps.

The following Sons of Veterans acted as pallbearers: E.H. Fernstermacher, John Rossman, Amos Sisco, Isaac Sisco, Ernest Nimbar and Walter Bohn.
