Marti, Emil (4 DEC 1888 - 14 APR 1938)

Emil Marti, 49, town of Little Black (Taylor Co., Wis.), was found dead about 5 p.m. last Thursday by members of his family in the Joe Berger logging shack in a swamp about 80 rods south of the Marti house.

Sheriff Herb Curran and Under-sheriff Chris Winkel of Taylor County, who investigated the case, stated that it was a plain case of suicide. Marti having drunk a bottle of carbolic acid. He had another bottle of the acid in a pocket, Sheriff Curran said.

Marti had last been seen by his wife Monday morning, April 11.

Two notes were found scratched on pieces of tarpaper by Marti’s side.

One of the notes reads: "I am going to get out of the way. I do not want to sit behind the bars for two years. So goodbye, I am taking the best way out of it."

Marti had been arrested Saturday evening on a traffic violation charge by Traffic Officer W.R. Haire.

The other note was addressed to his wife, Alma. "I am going to leave you all, Good bye. Take good care of mother."

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Pfughoeft and Hartwig Funeral home here, Rev. G.R. McKeith officiating. Interment was at Colby.

He was born in Switzerland Dec. 4, 1888.

Mr. Marti leaves his wife, seven daughters and two sons.
