Mueller, Mathias (27 July 1861 - 18 Oct. 1937)

Mathias Mueller, a pioneer of this community, died at his home in Colby Monday morning at 7:20 at the age of seventy-six years, leakage of the heart being the cause of his departure to the distant shore. He had been ill for several weeks. Funeral services were held at St. Mary’s Catholic church Wednesday morning at 9:30, Rev. L. J. Lang officiating, and internment was made in the church cemetery. Pall bearers were John Engeldinger, Peter Apfelbeck, Emil Fasbender, Andrew Arends, Otto Witte and Fred Wolk.

The deceased was born at Athron, Sheboygan county, on July 27, 1861, and came to this community over sixty years ago. He was married to Miss Bertha Wald on September 26th, 1889, after which the couple purchased a tract of land in Green Grove which they cleared and built into a fine farm. Several years later the farm was sold and another was purchased in the town of Hull. Mrs. Mueller died twenty-four years ago, and, three years after her death, Mr. Mueller retired and moved to the city of Colby and resided here until his death.

Surviving are three sons, Charles of Wells, Minn., Richard of Marshfield and George of Colby. Also four grand children, one great grand child and one brother, August Mueller, of Colby.

The deceased was a good Christian, and, like all our early pioneers, was of a congenial and friendly disposition, always ready to do his duties as he saw them. He endured many of the hardships of the early settlers, few of whom are still with us, and now another name is stricken from the roll of our early settlers.
