Drews, Donald W. (3 Oct. 1923 - 13 Sept. 2007)

Donald W. Drews, 83, of rural Mashfield, passed away peacefully with his wife at his side Sept. 13, 2007, in the Palliative Care Unit of Saint Joseph's Hospital.

Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 17, 2007, at Faith Lutheran Church. Burial will be in West Spencer Cemetery. The Rev. Lowell Bolstad will officiate. Maldon Plank will be the organist for Duane Helgerson. Pallbearers will be nephews, Keith Trowbridge, Lance David, Brian Heggelund, Troy David, Alan David and Craig David.

Visitation will be 10 a.m. until service time Monday at the church.

Maurina/Community Funeral Home is assisting the family.

Donald was born Oct. 3, 1923, to Harold and Elsie (Crossgrove) Drews. He was a graduate and valedictorian of Spencer High School class of 1941. He attended NYA School in Wausau and Manitowoc to become a machinist. He was employed at the Manitowoc shipyards, building submarines during World War II. Don returned to the family farm after his father was seriously injured, and this became his lifelong work. Donald and Silveria "Susie" David were married Feb. 14, 1948.

He was a past supervisor in the town of Spencer and on the FFA Spencer Activity Board. He was recognized as an Outstanding Retired Farmer in 1990, and served for 25 years on the Agricultural Soil Conservation Committee in Wausau.

For more than 30 years, Don was active on the executive board for the town of Spencer's Fire Department. Although retired, he enjoyed helping his son on the family farm. He loved the land and watching things grow. He always demonstrated a great interest in family, he liked to bowl, watch sports and would make time for a game of sheepshead and his grandchildren's activities.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Susie Drews of Marshfield; his children, Charles (Charmaine) Drews of Marshfield, Sharon (Jerry) Kobs of Spencer and Dianne (Mark) Dillman of Wausau; five grandchildren, Claire and Chloe Drews, Robin Kobs, Dana (Steve) Schubring and Amber Duranceau; three great-granddaughters, Alanna, Makenna and Ava Schubring; one brother-in-law, Ken Kraemer of Forest Park, Ill.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Elaine Kraemer, Ruby Nelson, and one brother-in-law, John "Jack" Nelson.

Memorials may be given to Faith Lutheran Church, Ministry Home Health Care, and the Palliative Care Unit in Donald's name.
