Hoffman, Herman (26 Sept. 1875 - 26 march 1942)

Herman Hoffman, 66, died at 7:30 p.m. March 16, 18942, at his home at 543 Maple Street, Manistee, Mich., after a lingering illness of seven years following an accident. He had been seriously ill since January, angina, and pectoris being the cause of his death.

Mr. Hoffman operated the J. B. Inderrieden company plant here during the season of 1932 and at that time made a wide circle of friends in and about Neillsville, Wis.

Mr. Hoffman was born September 26, 1875, to Pauline and Fred Hoffman, at Merrill, Wis. He was the youngest of nine children. He completed his early education there. As a youth he was employed in the Wisconsin timberlands. After completing further study, he became a licensed engineer and held position for ten years with Chicago firms. He served for five years as an instructor in the school of engineering in Milwaukee.

In 1919 he became chief mechanic for the W. R. Coach company’s many canning plants and later was superintendent of the Roach plants at Hart and Scottville. He took over the Arcadia Canny Company in 1916 and for seven years after 1919 served as president and treasurer of the Onekama Canning Company. From 1927 through 1931 he managed the Manistee Canning plant for the J. M. Paver and J. B. Inderrieden companies. In 1932 he operated the plant at Neillsville, retiring from business in 1936.

The departed was a charter member of the Onekama Lodge No. 437, F. & A. M.

He is survived by his wife, Emilia Arndt Hoffman, and a daughter, Mrs. Emily Summerfeldt, who lived at home. Two sons, Carl and Fred, died infancy. He also leaves two brothers, Randolph, Merrill, Wis., and Theodore, Hoquiam, Wash.

Funeral services were held Friday, march 20th, at 3 p.m. from the Masonic Temple at Manistee.
