Schreiber, Fred (20 Feb. 1893 - 22 Apr. 1933)

Fred Schreiber, a bachelor town of Green Grove farmer, was found dead under his tractor in his field by Frank Gerken and Herbert Neuhaus, neighbors, last Saturday.

Mr. Schreiber was dragging his field with his tractor, and, when he arrived at a muddy place, it is supposed, he unhooked the tractor from the drag and connected the tractor and drag with a long chain, for, on former occasions of this kind, his tractor became stalled in the mud. After crossing the muddy place, it is thought he remained on the tractor and merely reached down to unhook the long chain, keeping the tractor in gear with his foot on the clutch. Neighbors say he was in the habit of doing this. Then his foot must have slipped or he took it off the clutch without thinking and the tractor backed up over the drag, throwing him off the tractor - after passing over the drag - and, in some manner, was pulled under it. Frank Gerken and Herbert Neuhaus, hearing the motor of the tractor running after dark Saturday evening, when it was impossible to work, went to investigate and found Mr. Schreiber under the tractor. The differential had caught him, face downward, in the mud where he suffocated. Otherwise, the only injury to his body was a broken bone just above his ankle. His body served as a block for it could be seen that he had scraped the mud with his hands in an attempt to get out but it looked as if the more he scraped, the more the tractor would dig in.

Funeral services will be held at the Lulloff undertaking parlors this Thursday afternoon, Rev. H. K. Hartmann officiating, and internment will be made in the Green Grove cemetery.

The deceased was born in the town of Colby February 20th, 1893, thus reaching the age of forty years, two months and two days. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Mary Schreiber, of Abbotsford, one brother at Mendota, and a sister, Miss Emma Schreiber, of Los Angeles, Calif.
